By the time of the start of the 1975 – 1976 season, Ipswich had now established themselves as a major football team in England and the 75 – 76 campaign saw Ipswich continue their resounding success, a sixth position finish for Ipswich under the guidance of Bobby Robson was a fine success for the club.
Robson guided Ipswich to a third position finish at the end of the 1976 – 1977 campaign as they came narrowly close to winning the league title. It was 1978 which proved to be a special year for everyone in connection to Ipswich Town as the club won the FA Cup for the first time in the history of the club. They disposed Arsenal in the final as they enjoyed a 1-0 victory over the club in the final.
Ipswich continued their domination in English football the following season as they finished the campaign off in an impressive sixth position and reached the quarter finals of the FA cup, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat against Liverpool in the last eight.
Ipswich were once again highly convincing during the 1979 – 1980 league season as they finished it off in third once again narrowly missing out on the title and they enjoyed a fine run in the FA cup, reaching the quarter finals of the tournament, and suffering defeat against Everton in the last eight. Their third place finish was enough to secure the club a birth in the UEFA cup for the following campaign.
