Bobby Robson’s first few season in charge saw Ipswich struggle in the top flight and things proved even tougher during the 1970 – 1971 campaign as they narrowly escaped relegation, finishing the campaign off in 19th position. The only highlight of the campaign was their impressive run in the FA cup that saw them eventually suffer elimination after losing 1-0 against Stoke City in the fifth round of the competition.

They began to become a dominant force in English football during the 1972 – 1973 season as they were in emphatic form through out the campaign as they enjoyed finishing the season off in fourth position. Mick Mills was arguably one of the finest players in the football league and Brian Talbot and was in fine form for Town.
Robson once again guided Ipswich to a fourth position finish at the end of the 1973 – 1974 campaign as they started dominating the top flight.
The 1974 – 1975 campaign was one of the finest in Ipswich town football history, they met Norwich City in the quarter finals of the league cup suffering defeat against their local rivals and reached the semi final of the FA cup for the first time, suffering defeat against West Ham united in a game played at Stamford Bridge. Town also finished their campaign off in third position; it was their finest finish since winning the league in the year 1962.
