The 1960 -1 961 league season proved to be a happy time for Ipswich Town as it was the first year in the clubs history that they gained promotion in to the elusive top flight as they ran off as second division champions at the end of the season. The 1961 – 1962 league season was probably the finest in the history of Ipswich Town FC as they enjoyed a dream debut into the first division football as they finished it off as first division champions at the end of the campaign. Alf Ramsey had led them to emphatic glory in a team that included the likes of Ray Crawford and Ted Phillips. Alf Ramsey was offered the England job in 1963 due to the heroics he performed at Portman Road and Jackie Milburn took charge at the club during the 1963 – 1964 campaign. Ipswich struggled to a 17th position finish at the end of the previous season and faired much worse by the end of 1964, a rock bottom finish off 22nd place, in turn demoting the club in to second division football. They also suffered defeat to Stoke City in the fourth round of the FA cup, losing the match 1-0. Bill McGarry took charge at Portman Road in 1964 and despite guiding the club to an impressive fifth position finish in the second division they failed to gain promotion. The major down point of the campaign was the 5-0 hammering they received in the fourth round of the FA Cup against Tottenham.
