Ipswich Town Fc was formed in the year 1878 as Ipswich Association FC. It was not until the year 1936 which Ipswich really established themselves as a professional club and they won the southern league at their first attempt and were voted into the football league in the year 1938. They joined the league in to the third division south and were promoted as the division champions at the end of the 1953 -1 954 league season. They went down after one season but gained promotion once against the end of the 1956 – 1957 campaign, winning the division once again. They finished the 1958 league campaign in an impressive eighth place in the second division and established themselves in the second division. They reached the fifth round of the 1959 FA Cup, meeting Luton Town in the last sixteen before losing the match 5-2. The 1958 -59 season saw the emergence of Ray Crawford, a player who would go on to become the clubs all time scorer as he netted in 203 league goals in his career at Portman Road. Ted Phillips was prolific in front of goal also, most notably scoring a staggering 41 goals during the 1956 – 1957 season.
